Some believe that luck is, "when preparation meets opportunity” and this statement certainly rang true when, Caldwell and Johnson started Face Up Entertainment. Sean "BD" Caldwell and Mark "Mr. J" Johnson started out as mutual acquaintances that shared similar hobbies and networking circles. In the spring of 2015, both of them recognized that they held similar business practices and discussed the possibility of a forming a music company. Caldwell and Johnson founded Face Up Entertainment, LLC on April 1, 2015 with the hopes of showcasing St. Louis talent. Commitment and loyalty are two of the mottos, that Face Up Ent. uses to guide their music business.
Throughout Caldwell’s music career he wore many hats and gained tutelage from some of the biggest names in the music industry. He started his career by mentoring and managing National Recording Artist "J-Kwon". Once J-Kwon’s, International & Billboard Hit Single, "Tipsy" hit #7 on the Billboard 200 Chart, opportunities came pouring in for Caldwell. The success of his management with J-Kwon allowed him to work with music moguls such as: Jermaine Dupri CEO of So-So Def Records, Marion "Suge" Knight CEO of Deathrow Records, Mark Pitts of Arista and Jive Records, as well as A&R Rep, Mickey "Memphitz" Wright, CEO of the Hittz Committee. Due to Caldwell’s vast knowledge and experience within the music industry he founded Dawell Entertainment, a music artist management company. Caldwell’s network reached beyond St. Louis and this experience set him on the path to find another liked-minded entrepreneur. Johnson fit all of the criteria that he looked for in a business partner.
Johnson got his start in music with managing rap artists in the St. Louis area. Coincidentally, he met Brian Givance, a talented producer who also held the same drive and dedication to music. This common ground allowed them to build On 2 Productions, a dynamic production company that specialized in both songwriting and producing. In addition to producing, he decided to learn the business of music. Johnson felt that the key to making his artists hot and relevant were to stay true to themselves and true to the audience that listens to their music. These two entrepreneurs saw the potential within the community and believed their combined resources gave them the avenue to create a strong platform for new artists.
